Because nothing says “happy holidays” like beheading the nobles

Oh my God. I can’t believe I just found this. Last year I was in desperate need of extra credit in my AP European History class, and our teacher gave us an opportunity right before Christmas break: we had to write a Christmas carol that had to do with the French Revolution. Let me say that again: a Christmas carol about the French Revolution.

Here’s what I came up with:

(To the tune of Silver Bells.)

Paris sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in bonnet rouge style
In the air there’s a feeling
Of Revolution
People screaming, nobles running,
Seeing riot after riot
And on every street corner you’ll see

Bonnet rouge
Bonnet rouge
It’s Revolutionary time in Paris
The Guillotine
Hear them scream
Soon there will be equality

The bougeoisie fight, the royal family takes flight,
The Third Estate hates the queen,
As the Jacobins behead the nobles
Hear the blade fall
See the heads roll
This is Robespierre’s big scene
And above all the chaos you’ll see

Bonnet rouge
Bonnet rouge
It’s Revolutionary time in Paris
The Guillotine
Hear them scream
Soon there will be equality
Soon there will be equality

In retrospect, I feel like you could reasonably look at this as the work of a budding sociopath. Today’s carol is fittingly Silver Bells by Elvis Presley! 22 days until Christmas, 23 until Kwanzaa, and 17 until Hanukkah!
